 Another "thumbs up" for The Misadventures of Oliver Booth:

The Misadventures of Oliver Booth was the first book that I've requested from MBE, so when it arrived directly from the author, and signed to boot, I was excited!

This book follows the adventures of Oliver Booth as he makes a valiant attempt to fit in with a society that he will truthfully never belong to. He takes on an assistant, Bernard, at his failing antique store, who thankfully has more integrity than Mr. Booth and who also happens to have a natural eye for the business. Together they travel to Paris for a client, Mrs. Van Buren, and Mr. Booth ends up getting himself into all kinds of trouble.

The book itself was very entertaining, a glimpse into the life of the rich and famous and those who aspire to be rich and famous, and although I did find the writing itself to be a little wooden at times, it was very enjoyable.

Misadventures of Oliver Booth is what it is for Frisbeesage:

The Misadventures of Oliver Booth is a satirical look at high society of Palm Beach. Oliver is an antiques dealer who is constantly trying to swindle his way into more, more money, more food, more champagne, and anything else he can get his fat, grubby hands on. He hires a new shop assistant and finally meets his match. Oliver's many lies crumble around him and he is forced to face the music!
This book is an extreme, one-dimensional caricature of a greedy, money grubbing man trying to fill his pockets in a shallow, pretentious community. While Oliver is often so over-the-top that I had to laugh, I would soon get tired of him. What saves the book are some of the other characters: Bernard, the french shop assistant, Mrs. Van Buren, the smart and sensible wealthy widow, and her nephew Martin. I would have liked a little more depth to the book, but in the end I found it a light, entertaining read. I liked the characters enough that I would pick up a sequel to see what happened to them.

The Misadventures of Oliver Booth [Stacey's Review]

It's funny how an unlikable character can sometimes become the hinge that holds together so many likable ones. Stacey found that in The Misadventures of Oliver Booth. Here's an excerpt from her blog, book:thirty

Oliver Booth is an unlikeable, unsympathetic, unethical buffoon. Passing off Mexican imports as European antiques, Booth occupies a small shop and apartment just off (as in, around the corner from) Palm Beach's trendy Worth Avenue. He's nearly $3000 behind in his electric bill and hasn't paid his rent in months. He dresses in gaudy clothes and throws his morbidly obese self into the path of his affluent, uninterested neighbors. If this book had been solely about this character, I wouldn't have finished the book. He's just that aggravating.

But Booth actually serves as a catalyst for events that happen to two far more interesting characters: the wealthy, elderly matron Margaret Van Buren, and the young French traveler Bernard, who comes to work as a clerk in Booth's antiques shop.
