Diets for Healthy Healing has a distracting element that Ruth C can't ignore:

“Food is powerful medicine.”

Well, yes.

Then why are nutriceuticals so important to author Linda Page?

At first glance, Diets for Healthy Healing looks like a promising educational read. But, as the discerning reader quickly learns, it has a drawback. Firstly, the good points: Diets for Healthy Healing is a well organized reference book packed with sound nutrition advice written in easy to understand language. Chapters dedicated to some of today’s trendiest and most significant health and wellness topics include: allergies and asthma; arthritis; diabetes and hypoglycemia; cancer; digestive disorders; heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure; dealing with colds, flu, and infections; osteoporosis; weight loss, weight control; and, menopause, fibroids, and endometriosis. A “special bonus section” also focuses on daily dietary considerations for achieving anti-aging benefits, maintaining healthy skin, hair, and fingernails, and maximizing your child’s nutrition.

Author Linda Page does not merely focus on nutrition, however. She also emphasizes a well-rounded approach to health and wellness that advocates appropriate healthy lifestyle choices, adequate physical exercise, and relaxation, such as deep breathing exercises. To assist the reader in putting the nutrition knowledge and advice into practice, the book is riddled with simple recipes, including some vegetarian options, designed for each highlighted health condition or beauty ailment. Helpfully, each recipe is indexed and categorized for quick reference at the back of the book.

Now, the drawback: Diets for Healthy Healing has a sneaky way of attempting to flog trademarked nutriceutical products to the unsuspecting reader. It may seem like a minor fault, but it is so persistent throughout the book that it quickly starts to grate on one’s patience. Just when the reader is becoming engrossed in some aspect of the nutrition advice proffered by Linda Page, she slips in a reference to a nutriceutical product.

I can appreciate that the author is a business woman with a vested interest in selling her nutritional supplements, but to avoid alienating readers, it would be advisable to segregate the list of products available for purchase under each health condition. That way, readers who will never be inclined to purchase supplemental products can easily bypass the sales pitch.

Mildly recommended.

Diets for Healthy Healing is helpful for K. Jarko:

Dr. Linda Page's Natural Solutions to America's 10 Biggest Health Problems is a wealth of information. These 10 main health issues pertain to all of us or someone we know. In this book, with Dr. Page's well researched and tried methods as well as her wonderful easy recipes, you can take charge of your health concerns. Each topic has an overview, symptoms, risk factors and what you can do quickly to help ease whatever issues you might have. I particularly like the way some of the recipes have mini notes as to other issues they might help with. For me, I cross over into several categories and this makes it easy to figure out what would work best for me. I feel today, for women especially, their health issues go untreated and they put up with nagging symptoms that could be eased if they had the right information.

In the beginning of the book, Dr. Page quotes Albert Schweitzer when he said, " the doctor of the future is oneself." I truly believe that this is our future. Rising health-care costs and overwhelming symptoms can lead to undiagnosed issues and I think we all need to be more in-tune with our own bodies and we can make a difference in how we look and feel. I do believe in our medical health-care professionals but I feel there is increasing room for Naturopathy in our health-care. Dr. Page tells of her own journey with health-care and gives us the information to help ourselves without having to go through the trials she had to endure.  I look forward to trying more of the recipes and supplements she mentions.

Diets for Healthy Healing [Ali's Review]

Ali got a copy of Diets for Healthy Healing and posted her review on her blog Worducopia. She found some of the suggestions to be a bit of a salesman pitch. I'll let her tell you...

...I was interested to see what information a naturopath would have that might be different from what we've gained from Chris' doctor and The New American Diet Cookbook he recommended.

Dr. Page certainly does have information, and she's got a boatload of products to sell along with it. I have no interest in buying Detox Blood Purifier or Energy Green Renewal, but fortunately Crystal Star Herbs are just one of many strategies she suggests for getting on top of physical health.

Eating right sometimes gets trumped by other factors, like...oh... money? Or keeping kids interested in the foods they eat? fioce, over on the blog Surviving, makes an interesting point after reading Diets for Healthy Healing:

I have to admit that I enjoyed a lot of this guidebook/cookbook, although I shudder to think what most of her recipes would cost. As well, she relies very heavily on things which simply are not food. I showed the book to my brother in law. After leafing through it, he said, “So, you can’t follow her diet unless you live in her neighbourhood?”

Okay … “Hey, kids, Mommy’s made up a batch of Purifying Vitamin C Flush!” I’m sure that’s going to get them running. I’m just not sure which direction they’ll be running. It really does sound delicious. How about just calling it Yummy Strawberry Punch?

Richard Simmons once said: Come on! You can do it! Don't put that in your mouth! I'm paraphrasing here, of course. The thing is, there is something to the saying "you are what you eat". Nicole, from Linus's Blanket, got her hands on Diets for Healthy Healing and was suitably impressed:

I am a big believer in using my meals to stay healthy and out of the doctor's office. Every now and then I like to read a refresher to see what new information is out there and if there's something new I want to add to what I eat, or what new food theory I want to to test out and incorporate in my life if it proves to be worthwhile. This book is a great resource. I wish it were smaller, because it's not very wieldy; but I guess most reference books aren't. It was packed with information on food properties and health tips, not to mention recipes that you can try out in order to incorporate the changes that are mentioned.
