Epoch [Ryan's review]

On his Book Meview blog, Ryan gives a less than ecstatic account of the YA book Epoch while channeling his inner young adult. It appears Epoch ain't so epic for this reviewer:

Over the weekend I burned through Timothy Carter’s Epoch. It was provided free of charge and sent through Minibook Expo, an awesome site where you can get books for free so long as you let the publisher know what you thought about the book(s) in question...

Did I like it? Hit the jump and find out.

Epoch is not a book I would recommend to my friends, the main reason being that it isn’t written for anyone over the age of 16. Then again, that hasn’t stopped my peers from reading Harry Potter (the 5th film being a subject of protest in the book. More on the protesting later…), and I thoroughly enjoyed The Hobbit so who knows, but I can’t imagine my peers enjoying this short 300+ page read (large fonts make it a quickie).

Epoch [Dead Robot's Review]

Wow, are we that far behind on reviews? I just came across my review for my second MBE book: Epoch. I liked it, it being the first "Young Adult" book I've read in 30 years. Yes. I am that old. Stop laughing. Anyhoo, here's a snip of my own review:

This is my first YA (young adult) book I’ve read since cracking open Lemony Snicket book to read to my niece about 9 years ago, and before that, Heinlein’s Have Spacesuit Will Travel, back in the early 70s. I have to say, YA books have become a hell of a lot more sophisticated and pointed since I remember them. With nods to a certain coming of age boy-wizard, this is a streamlined, cartoony, less-subtle Golden Compass kind of adventure. Epoch races to the end of the world at a speed that post video game addicts can appreciate. It’s skillfully written with word plays, reversal phrasing and clear action that makes it a good read.

However (cue ominous organ music)…
