This book is the first in a trilogy, and to me, it felt like Act One of a three-act play. Vittorio and Cristina's journey to Canada is the climax of the story, but it didn't feel like the end. It left me feeling compelled to read the next book to find out what happens, mostly because the story felt incomplete. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this book enough to actually read the two that follow. I wanted to love this book, as so many other people clearly do, but I just couldn't.
